Linkin Park rumoured to be reuniting with Sum 41's Deryck Whibley on vocals
They're both making an announcement on Wednesday
Rumours are rife in the online world that Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley is poised to be unveiled as the new frontman of a reunited Linkin Park.
On Monday night (26th August), Sum 41 took to social media to announce that Deryck Whibley will be making an announcement on the morning of Wednesday 28th August.
‘Tune in Wednesday morning Deryck Whibley announcement,’ the cryptic and very brief message to fans read.
Curiously, Linkin Park launched a 100-hour countdown on their official website over the weekend that’s due to conclude at the time of Sum 41’s announcement on Wednesday morning.
The coinciding announcements have unsurprisingly fuelled intense speculation amongst the rock community that Linkin Park are reuniting with Whibley stepping into the late-great Chester Bennington’s shoes.
Although both camps have stayed quiet about the speculation, the idea that Whibley will unite with Linkin Park isn’t too implausible.
Whibley previously performed vocals on ‘The Catalyst’ at Chester Bennington’s tribute concert in October 2017.
A year later in August 2018, Sum 41 covered Linkin Park’s ‘Faint’ at Reading Festival and they were joined on stage by Mike Shinoda. Whibley’s knockout vocals on the cover were widely praised by fans.
However, in the aftermath of the performance, Whibley was reticent when asked if he would potentially join Linkin Park.
“I think that’s an impossible task,” he told The Jasta Show. “I think (Chester Bennington’s) are impossible shoes to fill.
“I don’t know if (Linkin Park is) ever gonna do anything. I have no idea what that’s gonna look like, or who that could be.”
The fact that Sum 41 are set to call it a day following the conclusion of their swansong tour in January 2025 has also added weight to the intense Linkin Park speculation.
Aside from the tribute concert in October 2017, Linkin Park have remained inactive since the untimely passing of Chester Bennington in July of that year.
Let’s see what happens tomorrow!
