Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has announced that his sons, Myles and Layne Ulrich, have formed a two-piece band called Taipei Houston.
Lars took to Instagram yesterday (1st September) to share a short video of 20-year-old Layne (bass/vocals) and 23-year-old Myles (drums) belting out a tune that, musically, owes more to The White Stripes than Metallica.
Alongside the video, Lars wrote: “Check it out… A couple dudes named Ulrich… Their new band is @taipei_houston…”
Since joining Instagram two week ago, Taipei Houston have already amassed 10,000 followers and they’ve also shared another song called ‘R E S P E C T E R’, which you can lend your lugholes to here:
The sons of Lars and his second wife Skylar Satenstein, Myles and Layne Ulrich uploaded a cover of The Beatles’ ‘Eleanor Rigby’ to YouTube under their Taipei Houston moniker back in April 2020.
Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone at the time: “Obviously, there’s been some incredible versions of ‘Eleanor Rigby’ along the way, but I’m pretty sure there’s never been one that had this kind of sound, this kind of feel, this kind of energy and madness to it. I was like, ‘You know what, boys? You done me proud.'”
Asked if Myles and Layne are fans of Metallica, Lars replied: “I don’t know if ‘fans’ is the first word I’d use,” he says. “But I think they respect it. They’re appreciative. … I think they’re fans enough, I would say.”
Both Myles and Layne Ulrich have shared additional clips of themselves playing various pieces of music over the last few months, with Myles sharing this particularly Dave Grohl-eque drum onslaught titled 'OUTRO'
Layne shared this snippet of a fast-paced distorted bass line with a definite hint of Nine Inch Nails
It remains to be seen whether any of these musical meanderings end up on a record - the Ulrich brothers have, as of the date of this article, yet to release any music.
Taipei Houston will perform their first show next week (9th September) at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach, California.
