HMV has told customers that it cannot accept gift cards and vouchers as it enters administration this morning.

The troubled high street retailer’s board of directors met last night (14th January) to discuss their options after requests for additional financing had failed. They later announced they were going to enter administration.

A HMV statement reads: "The board regrets to announce that it has been unable to reach a position where it feels able to continue to trade outside of insolvency protection.

"It is proposed that Nick Edwards, Neville Kahn and Rob Harding, partners of Deloitte LLP, will be appointed as the administrators of the company and certain of its subsidiaries.

"The directors of the company understand that it is the intention of the administrators, once appointed, to continue to trade whilst they seek a purchaser for the business."

Stores are still open for trading this morning as long as customers are paying by cash and/or credit and debit card.

However, just like many other stores, HMV Bullring has this morning tweeted: “Just to let you know, we cannot accept gift cards & vouchers of any kind, or offer refunds or exchanges on any product. Sincere apologies.

“We cannot accept trade-ins on pre-played games or our swap/shop offer. Again, sincere apologies for this, we hope you understand.”

HMV’s flagship store opened on London’s Oxford Street in 1921 with composer Edward Elgar taking part in the opening ceremony.

The company currently operates 273 stores across the United Kingdom, Ireland, Hong Kong and Singapore. Over 4,000 jobs are in jeopardy.
