“I know what it’s like to lose somebody like that”

Dave Grohl poignantly dedicated Foo Fighters’ Best International Band Kerrang! Award to Chester Bennington last night (21st June).
Foo Fighters attended the Kerrang! Awards ceremony at the Islington Assembly Hall ahead of their London Stadium shows this weekend where they scooped two coveted honours; Best International Live Act and Best International Band.
After receiving their gong for Best International Band from rock legend Alice Cooper, Dave closed his acceptance speech by dedicating the award to late Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington.
Drawing parallels to the death of Kurt Cobain 24 years ago, Dave closed his speech by saying: “On a serious note, I would like to dedicate this one to Chester (Bennington). I know what it’s like to lose somebody like that and at least we have his music forever, so this one’s for Chester.”
You can watch the speech in its entirety here:
Earlier in the speech, Dave stressed to new bands the importance of sticking with it and playing as many gigs as possible: “We’ve been a band, really it’s been 23, 24 years now, it’s been a long time. We’re old, that’s right, we’re old.
“When I look around, and just as everyone said, I see old friends that I haven’t seen in so long… I see people we’ve toured with, I see people that have inspired us (points to Alice Cooper). To stand on the same stage of Alice Cooper it’s a f---ing huge deal.
“For all of the new bands, all the kids that haven’t even started their bands yet, honestly I think the trick to it I think is to keep f---ing playing and don’t stop no matter what. Just keep going. Do it for the love of doing it and just keep f---ing going, it gets better and better and better.”
