Environmental Awareness Month on Kerrang! Radio
We're shining a spotlight on alternative and sustainable living
All this month on Kerrang! Radio we are celebrating Environmental Awareness Month and shining a spotlight on alternative and sustainable living.
There’s plenty to get stuck into to celebrate a sustainable September this Environmental Awareness Month, such as Second Hand September which may include swapping out buying fast fashion to buying from second-hand sites and charity shops or getting involved in Organic September where you could give growing your own veg ago or only buying local produce.
Here are some of our top tips for alternative and sustainable living:
1) Swap out buying fast fashion to buying from second-hand sites and charity shops. Also, sell or donate old clothes that still have life left in them preventing them from going to landfill.
2) Plan meals to reduce food waste! This way you'll use all the ingredients. Make the most of your freezer too if you don't have time to use the ingredient before it goes off. Food you may not know you can freeze includes milk, herbs, hard cheese, bread, fruit and even wine!
3) Try to reduce your food miles by checking labels and trying to buy from producers as close to home as possible. Or even give growing your own fruit and veg a go!
4) Think about how you travel. Could you walk, take a bike or perhaps there's a bus route that will take you right to your destination?
5) Switch off. More electricity than you think is used in homes to power appliances when they're on standby mode. And remember, whenever you leave the room switch off the light!
6) Reducing water temperatures can help. Try washing your clothes at 20 or 30 degrees. It still washes your clothes and saves some energy whilst doing it!
7) Reuse your empties for example refill empty handwash bottles, cereal pack liners can be used in place of food storage bags and takeaway tubs can be used to store leftovers.
8) As we are heading towards the winter months, we may be looking to the thermostat to crank the heating up. Think about layering up instead and turning that thermostat down a couple of degrees.
We’ve only got one home, so let’s do our bit to look after it! Alternative and Sustainable Living on Kerrang! Radio. Helping you help the planet.
