Dave Grohl: Gangnam Style Is One Of My Favourite Songs
He makes the comments at South by Southwest in Texas
Dave Grohl has heaped huge praise on Psy’s all-conquering K-Pop anthem ‘Gangnam Style’ calling it “one of my favourite f*ing songs of the past decade.” **
The Foo Fighters lynchpin made the comments during his impassioned keynote speech at South by Southwest in Texas yesterday (14th March).
Speaking about how aspiring musicians shouldn’t try to adhere to the fickle tastes of critics or what’s expected of them, he said: "F*** guilty pleasure. How bout just pleasure?
"I can truthfully say out loud that 'Gangnam Style' is one of my favorite f---ing songs of the past decade. It is. Is it any better or worse than the latest Atoms for Peace album? Hmmm. If only we had a celebrity panel of judges to determine that for us.
“What would J-Lo do? Paging Pitchfork (the music website). Come in, come in. Pitchfork. We need you to determine the value of a song.
“Who f***ing cares? Who's to say what's a good voice and what's not a good voice ... 'The Voice'? Imagine Bob Dylan standing there singing 'Blowing in the Wind' in front of Christina Aguilera? Mimicking Christina’s voice 'Mmm, I think you sound a little nasally and sharp.'
“It's your voice, cherish it, respect it, nurture it, challenge it, stretch it, scream it until it's f***ing gone, because everyone's blessed with at least that. And who knows how long it's going to last."
Elsewhere in the speech, Dave poignantly reflected on the heartbreak of Kurt Cobain’s death in April 1994 and how he couldn’t bare to listen to music in the immediate aftermath.
He told the 1,000 strong crowd that months later he recorded 14 songs over five days as “an experiment and therapy.” Some of the tracks later appeared on Foo Fighters’ self-titled debut album.
Dave is due to perform with Sound City Players at the annual music industry gathering.
