blink-182 fans can expect a much more 'aggressive' and 'experimental' sound from the new album than their previous output, according to founding member, bassist and vocalist Mark Hoppus.

Speaking to NME, Mark teased details about the as-yet-untitled effort, which will be a direct follow-up to 2016's 'California', the first release after Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba replaced Tom DeLonge in the blink-182 line-up after the band's comeback in 2015.

"It’s very different to 'California'," he said of the new album, which has apparently been in the works for several years. "It’s a lot more aggressive. It’s darker in theme and tone."

And with a reported 40 songs to choose from, Hoppus is certain that the latest blink album will not exactly be what fans are probably expecting. "If you like ‘California’ to ‘Enema Of The State’," he continued, "Then this album is more like the untitled record where we are trying to experiment more.

"Trying to experiment more, trying different sounds, and trying to expand upon what people think blink-182 is."

1992

blink-182 were formed in 1992, when Tom DeLonge entered a Battle of the Bands competition at high school and met drummer Scott Raynor. After befriending a fellow musician named Kerry Key and his girlfriend Anne Hoppus, she then introduced her brother Mark - and the rest, as they say, is history.

Being the main lyricist for both blink and new supergroup Simple Creatures which features All Time Low's Alex Gaskarth, Mark spoke about the inspiration behind his current workings for the groups. "They’re both quite personal," he admitted.

"I think that the world is quite a strange place right now in general. People are really wound up, everyone is on edge and that seeps into everything that you do.

"There’s also a lot of hope and positive things happening in the world. Hopefully we are moving the world in the right direction, even in the face of all of these strange obstacles."

Don’t forget, Simple Creatures headline The Avalanche Stage hosted by Kerrang! Radio at Download Festival on Saturday 15th June. Weekend tickets to are on sale right here.
