They have been named as 21-year-olds Eve Smith and Darcy Ross, and Rafel Jeanne, who was 24.

Two others, Sophie Russon, aged 20 and 32-year-old Shane Loughlin, have been taken to hospital with serious injuries after police found their VW Tiguan in the Old St Mellons area of the city.

Police say the car had been in a crash and is thought to have left the A48.

The Gwent force had previously appealed for information to try and trace they group who had been out on Friday night.

It's thought the three women and two men had been in Newport before travelling to Porthcawl and back to Cardiff.

The VW Tiguan they were travelling in was discovered in the Old St Mellons area of Cardiff early on Monday.

Specialist officers are supporting their families and investigations into what happened are continuing.
