Heavy snow causes significant disruption for transport across UK
Airports across England and Wales have been affected by the poor weather
Heavy snowfall has hit the UK, causing major travel disruption across much of the country.
A cold front has brought freezing temperatures across the UK, with the Met Office enforcing an amber weather warning for snow and ice being issues over the weekend.
As a result of the poor weather, significant disruption has been felt across the country, with vehicles being left stranded across northern England.
Rail companies have also delayed and cancelled services, as the Met Office said that those living in more rural communities could be cut off.
The service added that as much as 40 centimetres of snow could fall onto areas above 300 metres before conditions begin to east on Sunday (January 5th).
Snow has already caused major disruption across many airports in England and Wales, with Manchester, Leeds Bradford, Bristol, Birmingham and Cardiff airports all being affected by the weather front.
Manchester and Liverpool John Lennon Airports closed their runways for several hours before reopening, while Leeds Bradford Airport remains shut.
Passengers travelling across the country have been warned that delays to journeys are to be expected as a result of the conditions.
Snow closed the A628 Woodhead Pass which connects Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire through the Peak District overnight in both directions between the A616 at Flouch and the A57 at Hollingworth.
Traffic was also stopped on the A1(M) southbound between J61 Bowburn and J60 Bishop Auckland in County Durham due to stranded vehicles on the carriageway before being released just before 10.30am.
As the cold front continues to pass through, the Met Office has now issued a yellow weather warning for Monday (January 6th) for rain across southern England where flooding could be likely.
