Tina Edwards Mix - Jazz FM Voices
Celebrating the union of friendship and Jazz between Chicago and London.
Last updated 17th May 2021
Throughout 2021, Jazz FM Voices is asking - "what is important to us and our musical community?"
As part of this, we will be inviting some our favourite musicians, selectors and creatives to share the music that speaks to them and fuels their creativity.
This month, we've invited DJ, Broadcaster and Music Journalist, Tina Edwards, to curate a mix for us - and it is a beauty!
Tina chose to celebrate the union of friendship and jazz between Chicago and London. She says:
"To me, Chicago is the coolest city in the world - up there with London, of course. When it comes to jazz, both cities share the same values about collaboration and respecting traditions whilst pushing them forward. When producing CHICAGOXLONDON at Total Refreshment Centre in 2017, such a strong bond developed between not just musicians but writers, radio hosts, DJs; all kinds of music fans. I still share music with my International Anthem pals on the regs - there's a really strong union between the contemporary jazz scenes.
The first half of this mix is music from the Windy City; I wanted to reflect the city’s grit, informal attitude and penchant for protest with a lo-fi, mixtape aesthetic. There’s a couple of recommendations from my good friend King Hippo in there, too. In the epicentre of the mix, I drew out some collaborations between London and Chicago artists, before moving to uptempo selections that reflect the electrifying eclecticism of my hometown."

Alongside an expertly mixed selection of music, Tina is also joined by King Hippo, Jaimie Branch, Dexron Douglas, Ashley Henry, Lexis Blondin, and Emma Warren.
About Tina Edwards
One of the most curious and respected selectors in the U.K., Tina Edwards joins the dots between jazz and club culture.
Tina brings together a broad range of sounds; think contemporary and uncovered gems; large-scale jazz, funk, disco, a spectrum of house music and even left-field pop; nothing is off the table. The spirit of the UK Jazz sound - which Tina has been championing through her radio and presenting projects since 2014 - is at the epicentre of everything she does.
With support from Jamz Supanova, Gilles Peterson, Murder He Wrote and Colleen “Cosmo” Murphy, Tina Edwards has shared line-ups with Poly-Ritmo, Tash LC and DJ Amir. She made her Boiler Room debut in the first lockdown, and is a member of admired communities including Total Refreshment Centre, Worldwide FM and many more within London’s thriving creative scene.
In late 2019, just a year after Tina began playing out, Jamz Supanova invited her to contribute a mix to her Selector Radio show - which is broadcast to more than thirty countries around the world. Alongside a feature in LGBTQI+ magazine DIVA (Tina is bisexual) and with her first headline UK tour in tow (Universal Sanctuary), Tina’s visibility exploded - just in time for the pandemic to hit.
In demand across the UK, Tina’s headlined parties in Bristol, Liverpool (Anti Social Jazz Club) and Manchester (Heliocentric). She’s played some of London’s most coveted clubs and audiophile venues; Corsica Studios, Five Miles, TRC, LGBTQI+ space The Chateau, Spiritland, Ronnie Scott’s and the Royal Academy of Arts, where she’s a resident.
