Jazz FM is celebrating International Women’s Day across the schedule, dedicating a week to the music, stories and charities that champion and support women. From The Big Easy__ to Jazz FM Voices, hear sound capsules and interviews from enlightening guests.
We will not only talk about the innovative women of jazz, blues and soul, but also focus on a variety of organisations and charities that benefit women in the UK, as well as leading entrepreneurs in Business Breakfast.

Saturday 6th March
Join Lou Paley for Jazz FM Voices: Women In Jazz, as she explores some of the women who played a pivotal role in shaping Jazz history. Expect record-scratched swinging tracks from vocalist Lil Hardin to Jazz Trumpeter and member of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Clora Byrant.
Sunday 7th March
John Osborne honours three female artists who have had a huge influence on jazz, soul and blues in his Trio feature. Rush Fisher interviews Deelee Dubé in Full Circle, while Clare Teal celebrates the best in big band and swing music from women artists and musicians. End the day with Jez Nelson who dedicates an hour to jazz vocalist, songwriter, civil rights activist and actress, Abbey Lincoln.
Monday 8th March - International Women's Day
In The Business Breakfast, Helen Pankhurst (great granddaughter of Emeline Pankhurst) talks about women leaders, in addition to Vicky Pryce – former Chief Economic Advisor to the government – who discusses her book Women vs Capitalism.
Throughout the day, Jazz FM presenters including Clare Teal, Jez Nelson, John Osborne, Ruth Fisher, Mark Walker, Helen Mayhew and Sarah Ward will select music and pay tribute to ground-breaking female music icons.
For the night owls, enjoy music from an all-women line-up in Ruth Fisher’s The Performance Series, and from 10pm Late Night China Moses presents a laid back mix of jazz and soul, with a touch of blues and R&B, featuring her ‘life songs’ from inspiring female musicians.
Tuesday 9th March
Start your day by listening to Irene Molodtsov on The Business Breakfast. As CEO of Sia Partners UK & Ireland, she explores the job bias against women applying for senior roles and what should be done about it. From 9pm, in Sarah Ward will be looking back at some of her former guests on Jazz Travels – exploring groundbreaking musicianship, innovative production, and inspiring activism!
From today until Fri 12th, we also be sharing the work of charities that we believe are doing vital work to support and champion women.
Walk the Walk, Sistah Space, Routes and Stonewall will share sound capsules that highlight the work they do on Breakfast with Nigel Williams, Daytimes with Anne Frankenstein and Afternoons with Jamie Crick.
Plus, here on the Jazz FM Website there will be a more extensive hub to provide links and information from a wider range of charitable organisations.
Wednesday 10th March
The Big Easy with Lil’ Koko celebrates the music and lives of some of New Orleans’ most iconic female, and female-identifying, performers. Including the the Soul Queen of New Orleans, Irma Thomas, and Tank and the Bangas in conversation.
Thursday 11th March
It’s an all-female edition of True Brit tonight from 9pm, featuring some of our favourite homegrown musicians, all of whom just happen to be female. Including veterans like Dame Cleo Laine and Norma Winstone, plus young lionesses like Cassie Kinoshi and Nubya Garcia.
Friday 12th March
Discover under-appreciated and underplayed female artists with Anne Frankenstein in The Late Lab, from Midnight.
In The Business Breakfast, Senior Director of LinkedIn Janine Chamberlin talks about how female employment and job opportunities have been disproportionately affected by Covid-19 and the pandemic. We also explore women working in STEM –science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Plus, for those who prefer jazz after dark, Helen Mayhew presents an all-female edition of Late Night Jazz from 10pm. You’ll hear everyone from Emily Remler to Maria Schneider, Dee Dee Bridgewater to Ingrid and Christine Jensen, and Esperanza Spalding to Jessica Williams.
Saturday 13th March
From 2pm, join YolanDa Brown on Saturday for her weekly upbeat mix of the best jazz, soul and blues. This week, she'll be digging into the back catalogue of her featured artist, vocal icon Sade. Plus, a selection of grooves that inspire YolanDa and her playing.
In this week's edition of Jazz FM Voices, China Moses presents Women In Music. Along with her industry colleagues, China will explore the treatment of women working in music and what the future holds. Featuring interviews from managers, musicians, journalists and event producers, the ensemble will share honest experiences, and respond to the IWD2021 theme ‘Choose To Challenge’. Join them from 9pm.
Sunday 14th March
Women of the blues will guide your Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening. Hear an exclusive interview with David Freeman and international icon, Joanna Connor in Blues and Boogie.
