This 8-part landmark series, presented by Simon Phillips and produced in house told the story of UK Soul from the 1960s all the way through until now with over 30 contributors recorded specifically to tell the story, which covered Northern Soul, Lovers Rock, Acid Jazz and the Nu Soul sound of today.
The series can be listened to as a boxset for a limited time here and you can vote for the series at https://poll-tric.org.uk/
Names across the series included Beverley Knight, Mica Paris, Courtney Pine, Emeli Sande, Omar, Chris Amoo, Jean-Paul “Bluey” Manick, Billy Ocean and Carl McIntosh.
The eight hours devoted to an in-depth exploration of the British contribution also celebrated those instrumental in making the genre a success, including the legendary DJs Colin Curtis, Greg Wilson and Trevor Nelson, alongside record company owners and producers including Don-E and Eddie Piller.
Using interviews, in nearly every case conducted over a number of hours, the series is a time capsule of the evolution of UK Soul with surprising stories, unique perspectives and never-before-heard anecdotes from those who were witness to over 5 decades of music, sharing the highs and lows of their experiences.
In addition, the series metaphorically toured the country, acknowledging the contribution that performers have made across the United Kingdom, from Edinburgh to Rochdale and Wolverhampton, alongside the more recognised locations of Wigan, London and the like.
The series is nominated alongside TV shows such as “Drive To Survive” (Netflix), “Beckham” (Netflix) and “Mr Bates v The Post Office” (ITV). To Vote for “The Story of UK Soul” in the factual category, go to https://poll-tric.org.uk/.
