Who's the Daddy?

A packed Ronnie Scott’s witnessed a future star last night as former Robert Glasper Trio drummer Chris 'Daddy' Dave played another sold out one night only gig with his band Drumhedz. Seen by many as a pivotal re-inventor of the art of jazz drumming he delivered a heady live mixtape of familiar jazz riffs over audacious, dangerous beats to whet the appetite for his album due in March next year on the iconic Blue Note Records. Chris Dave's highly inventive ideas range from afro-funk to grooves referencing Herbie Hancock's early 1970s fusion, hip hop basslines manifested from jazz samples used by producer J Dilla and A Tribe Called Quest to covering saxophonist Kenny Garrett's muscular 'African Exchange Student'.
The band included acclaimed saxophonist Marcus Strickland, bass player Braylon Lacy and the talented 19 year old James Francies on Hammond organ and keyboards,
Dave worked on Adele’s multi-Grammy nominated album '21', Robert Glasper Experiment’s ‘Black Radio’ and recently toured as drummer for a resurgent D’Angelo.
