For the first time, Motown Records have released an official music video for the iconic Marvin Gaye song 'What's Going On', as part of the label's 60th birthday celebrations. The video made its premiere at the 2019 Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference in the USA last week. It's been directed by emerging filmmaker Savanah Leaf who has mixed archive footage with her own 2019 material filmed in Michigan, focussing on societal issues of today, addressing water crisis, school shootings, universal healthcare and police brutality.
“This is a historic song for an important moment in history, and what’s beautiful is that its message is timeless and universal,” Leaf told the UDiscoverMusic website, “It’s about human emotions, human relationships and a coming together. My hope is that our music video will remind people to continue asking the question Marvin Gaye asked in 1971.”
'What's Going On' is the first in a series of videos commissioned by Universal Music's "Never Made" series.
