London’s The Wigmore Hall, an established home of Chamber Music, has announced U.S pianist and composer Vijay Iyer as the next Jazz Artist in Residence. Iyer is the fourth to take on this role following the incumbent Chrisian McBride, Joshua Redman and Brad Mehldau and will be in place from  January 2017.

Director of Wigmore Hall John Gilhooly commented “I’ve admired Vijay Iyer’s work for many years now. I attended one his live shows for the first time in Paris last year and was blown away by the immediacy and vitality of his musicianship. After meeting with him the next day, creative sparks began to fly and I knew that he would be a great Jazz Artist in Residence for Wigmore Hall.”

Like his predecessors Iyer will curate concerts, beginning with a duo with trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith on 6th January 2017 which follows on from a duo album release coming later this year.

Christian McBride will continue his current residency with a duo concert featuring another bassist, Edgar Meyer on 18th March, and a planned duo concert with Chick Corea.
