On Easter Monday 2020, we celebrated UK Music Day.

The entire day was created to show support for the British jazz community which has been strongly affected by the ongoing COVID-19 crisis with most or in some cases, all income drying up (read our COVID-19 support guide here). The Musicians' Union has calculated that British musicians have lost over £20 million since the outbreak.

From 6am until 7pm Nigel Williams, Anne Frankenstein and Jamie Crick played nothing but jazz, soul and blues music from British musicians or those who call the UK their home, and featured interviews and archive session performances each hour. Mark Walker also presented a supercharged UK only Jazz FM’s Greatest.

Then from 7pm, Jazz FM opened the gates to its Virtual Jazz Festival – a multi-artist jazz festival, exclusive to Jazz FM. Artists from all over the UK and the world performed exclusive performances from their own homes, studios and offices, all in support of UK Music Day!

Throughout the duration of UK Music Day, we highlighted the fundraising of the MU’s Coronavirus Hardship Fund, to help support the jazz and music community. The MU Hardship Fund is working alongside Help Musicians UK and PRS For Music to help as many musicians as they possibly can with funding at this unprecedented and challenging time.
