Renowned jazz trombonist Ashley Slater made a surprise appearance on the heats of 'talent' show X-Factor as part of his new pop duo Kitten and the Hip. Ashley is long time spokesman and original member of recently reformed ground breaking eclectic British big band Loose Tubes as well as star vocalist of hit making dance outfit Freak Power. Unfortunately an openly ageist panel dispensed with 53 year old Ashley (The Hip) from the equation and chose to move on with only his 28 year old wife and singer Scarlett Quinn (Kitten). According to Slater's Facebook page this had already been anticipated and so the decision was an easy one for Scarlett who remains on the show.

Meanwhile Ashley Slater is performing a solo improvisational set more akin to his Loose Tubes side at the monthly Jazz In The Round night which returns on Monday 29th September at the Cockpit Theatre in London's Marylebone. Far from being a solo appearance forced by his recent TV experiences this is a regular feature at Jazz In The Round and will be the middle of three sets including headliners Partisans who showcase their dark and funky new album 'Swamp' plus saxophonist Tommy Andrews. All four sides of the theatre will be full and host Jez Nelson hosts quirky interviews plus freeform painter Gina Southgate captures every moment live on canvas.

Jazz In The Round is the last Monday of every month at the Cockpit. More information here.
