Tributes paid to Tomasz Stanko
The Polish avant-garde trumpeter has died aged 76
Polish avant-garde trumpeter Tomasz Stanko has died at the age of 76, after losing a battle with lung cancer. A dominant figure on the free jazz scene in Europe, Stanko was inspired by Miles Davis and Chet Baker in the 1950’s and eventually made New York his home, gaining global recognition alongside legendary drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Dave Holland who tweeted yesterday to say “Tomasz was a unique musician with deep feelings and gentle soul”. Contemporary trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire said “thank you for the love, inspiration and encouragement”.
British Photographer William Ellis captured Stanko at The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles in 2015, holding his favourite album ‘Kind of Blue’. He said “All life for me is ‘Kind of Blue’ - very simple. What is most important - beautiful sound and Miles”
