Acclaimed jazz-fusion drummer/percussionist Alphonse Mouzon passed away over the weekend following a short battle with cancer, he was 68. In September, he was diagnosed with stage four of a rare neuroendocrine carcinoma, and was forced to ‘crowdfund’ the expensive treatment. Despite raising the $61,000 required, he died on Christmas Day 2016.

Mouzon signed to Blue Note records in the early 70’s and most notably founded Weather Report with Miroslav Vitouš, Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter. He worked as a band leader and a collaborator, performing with McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Santana, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and many more. He was also the founder of the Tenacious Record label.

Christian McBride and Dianne Reeves are among fans who have paid their respects on Twitter.
