The Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Vocals Competition will take place November 14 & 15 in Los Angeles. The competition will feature young jazz vocalists performing in front of a panel of vocal greats including Dee Dee Bridgewater, Patti Austin and Al Jarreau.

The competition switches format each year in rotation with different instrumentalist categories. Previous winners and runners up of the Jazz Vocal competition were in 2010 and can be heard regularly on Jazz FM including (First Place) Cécile McLorin Salvant (Second Place) Charenée Wade and (Third Place) Cyrille Aimée.

Competitors will battle for coveted scholarships and prize moneys exceeding $100,000 which includes a $25,000 first place scholarship and a guarantee of a recording deal with Concord Music. Last year trumpeter Marquis Hill from Chicago won the prize.

Any proceeds from the competition and follow-up concert go towards the Thelonious Monk Institute’s school jazz education schemes right across America, and globally. All of the Institute’s education programs are provided free of charge to students, schools and communities worldwide.
