Ground breaking legendary saxophonist Ornette Coleman, now 84 years old, quietly released new music just before Christmas and the New Year, as part of a four man collaborative project group called New Vocabulary. The band’s self titled 12 track album came out with barely any publicity on the artist run website and label System Dialling Records. It features Ornette’s free alto playing mixed with new school electronics and trumpet from Jordan McLean of the band Antibalas and the musical ‘Fela’ along with drummer Amir Ziv and pianist Adam Holzman.

This is quite an event, as Coleman’s recordings are rare these days, and although it’s a new release the music is from 2009.

Ornette met McLean at a performance of ‘Fela’ and developed a friendship that lead to the collaboration. Jordan McLean and Amir Ziv are co-owners of the label and McLean said of Coleman, “We were so at ease making music with him because he can set a person free just by being himself, and with the generous nature of his whole being.”
