Saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings has announced that his group Shabaka and the Ancestors will make their debut on the Impulse! record label this March with their second studio album titled We Are Sent Here By History.
The British jazz star, who’s won four Jazz FM Awards and is a key member of The Comet is Coming and Sons of Kemet, says this new project is “conceptualized as an album-long sonic poem examining the present and future”. With their breakout 2016 album, Wisdom of Elders, Shabaka & The Ancestors were established as a sudden force in spiritual jazz.
Recorded in Cape Town, the album explores African and Afro-Caribbean traditions with guest vocalist and performance artist Siyabonga Mthembu who composed lyrics for Shabaka to craft his music and poetry around.
The album is released on March 13th with a series of live UK dates at the beginning of May, including a performance at Propaganda: A weekend curated by Shabaka Hutchings on Sunday 10th May at Barbican Centre. Tickets are available from here.
