The Medical Daily reports that playing a wind instrument can help alleviate Obstructive Sleep Apnea, a condition that prevents natural breathing during sleep and can affect the overall health of the sufferer.
This was the finding of study presented at the Sleep and Breathing Conference 2015. Sleep Apnea is caused by blockage to the airway by an array of different factors from smoking and drinking, to body weight and genetics. The condition can cause raised blood pressure, heart disease, fatigue related accidents, depression and more. In America, Sleep Apnea reportedly affects over 18 million people.
Taking up a wind instrument improves muscle toning around the airway where softer tissue can collapse during sleep, obstructing breathing and causing Apnea.
