Orchestral jazz manoeuvres in the dark

Ronnie Scott’s jazz club is preparing to host a sequence of brilliant British large ensembles in September and October. 

On Sunday September 6 The Human Revolution Orchestra (HRO), led by trumpeter Sean Corby follow up their sellout date at The Union Chapel in Islington last year with their Ronnie’s debut. Once again invited special guest is American trombonist Robin Eubanks. HRO comprises upwards of 19 members in their collective big band and prides itself in bringing together older established and younger up and coming players, featuring original music.

From September 23-26 it’s the much anticipated return of the legendary 21-piece Loose Tubes. The band won a Jazz FM award in June for their triumphant appearance at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival and the elation of their subsequent residency at Ronnie Scott’s shortly after, returning after 24 years, is captured on some of the recordings on their latest album ‘Arriving.’

Finally on October 1 saxophonist Phil Meadows brings the 21-piece 2015 Parliamentary Jazz Award-winning Engines Orchestra to Ronnie’s together with his own Phil Meadows Group at the core. Acclaimed young players from the Chaos Collective, including pianist Elliot Galvin and award-winning trumpeter Laura Jurd are joined by orchestral woodwinds, brass and string sections. They’ll be performing music from their recent album release ‘Lifecycles.’
