New Woody Allen movie celebrates 1930’s jazz era

The latest movie from writer and director Woody Allen gets its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival tonight (Wednesday 11th May). Café Society is a romantic-comedy set against the jazz and swing era of 1930’s Hollywood, starring Jesse Eisenberg as a young Brooklynite who moves to Tinseltown to live with his uncle (Steve Carell) and Kirsten Stewart as the unavailable object of his affections. They’re all swept up in the movies, music, drugs and speakeasies that defined the spirit of an era.

Woody Allen is a huge jazz fan, he spent his youth determined to make it as a New Orleans-style clarinet player, originally writing movie scripts ‘just to pay the bills’. His Oscar-winning 2011 film Midnight In Paris featured a complete jazz soundtrack by guitarist Stephane Wrembel.

Café Society will see its full cinema release at the end of July.
