New US TV drama explores the birth of jazz in New Orleans
'Storyville' is set at the turn of the 20th Century in a corrupt New Orleans, where prostitution is decriminalised and jazz is born.
US subscription TV channel Starz is planning a new drama exploring the subculture that led to the birth of jazz, including the decriminalisation of prostitution, in a heavily corrupt New Orleans at the turn of the 20th Century. The series, working title ‘Storyville’, is created by George Wolfe, Tony Award winning writer and director who has a history in Broadway musicals.Â
New Orleans has already been the setting for acclaimed TV series ‘Treme’ dramatising lives in the Crescent City shorty after the devastation of floods caused by Hurricane Katrina. Many real and authentic New Orleans jazz artists had lasting cameo roles including Trombone Shorty, Donald Harrison and Kermit Ruffins.
