New recordings not cutting the mustard for Coleman
A law suit filed on behalf of legendary saxophonist Ornette Coleman claims that the release of recordings made in 2009 were released without his consent.
On January 12th we reported about a new release by the band New Vocabulary featuring legendary avant-garde saxophonist Ornette Coleman.
Now it has emerged that a law suit has been filed on Coleman’s behalf against New Vocabulary members Jordan McLean (also of the band Antibalas) and Amir Ziv. The suit claims that recordings, made by Coleman with the pair when he was 79, were released without his consent.
Ornette Coleman, now 85, was introduced to Jordan McLean at a Broadway theatre production of the musical ‘Fela’ and subsequently extended the invitation to visit him at home to discuss music and record some sessions. McLean asked if he could release these but was denied. Coleman then asked directly, and via his lawyer, for the return of the recordings but McLean released them instead.
It is further alleged that an individual not recorded at the sessions is credited as having participated, that music was added to the recordings after the fact and that the public is likely to be misled into believing that Coleman approves of, or is affiliated with, the public release of these recordings.
According to a recent press release an official Ornette Coleman live album recorded last year featuring Sonny Rollins and many more will be released later this year.
