The new documentary film ‘Amy’ about iconic young British singer Amy Winehouse looks to be heading for record earnings in the US for a film of this category.

Industry insiders have been surprised with the box office success in the first few weeks of release, $4.7 million to date. This places Asif Kapadia’s film among the highest earning specialty documentaries in recent years.

The initial release in just 6 theatres grew to 435. Documentary productions don’t earn anywhere near the sums of Hollywood blockbusters but in context this appears to be a remarkable genre success.

Amy’s story is one of a rapid rise to worldwide stardom, GRAMMY awards, a personal life plagued by drugs and alcohol addiction, incident and drama finally ending with her tragic death aged 27 in 2011.
