New film about John Coltrane planned for release late 2015

The life and times of saxophonist John Coltrane are the subject of an as yet un-named theatrical documentary destined for release in late 2015. It will be written and directed by award-winning filmmaker John Scheinfeld who had produced ‘The U.S. vs. John Lennon’ and ‘Who Is Harry Nilsson (and Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him?)’ 

It has the full cooperation of John Coltrane's estate and the makers have been granted unprecedented access to his complete recording catalog including Blue Note and legendary sessions for Atlantic, Impulse! and Prestige Records. The film will be entirely scored with Coltrane's music.

The film will set out to explore how his music transcended race and faith and continues to appeal to new listeners today. Revealing family home movies, rare TV and film performances and audio recordings tell his story with contributions from family, those who played with him, and iconic people who continue to draw from his fearless creative spirit and dynamic music even today. It is set against a backdrop of social turmoil in America and looks at both Coltrane's demons and inspirations.

In 1990 a documentary called ‘The World According To John Coltrane’ was produced with co-operation from his widow Alice Coltrane and focused on the later period in his music and his exploration of Eastern spirituality. 

John Coltrane is seen as one of the most significant saxophonists in music history, who’s career took on an increasingly spiritual dimension as it progressed. He made many historic, key jazz recordings including ‘A Love Supreme’ in 1964. ”Trane" died in 1967 at the age of 40, an enigmatic, dominant figure whose massive influence on generations of artists has grown even stronger since his death.
