New box set celebrates the music of Ornette Coleman

The music of saxophonist Ornette Coleman is to be celebrated with a new deluxe box set curated by his son, drummer and band leader Denardo Coleman. The limited edition 'Celebrate Ornette' set will be released on January 29th, 2016 and will include dozens of performances from contemporary artists on four 180 gram vinyl LPs, and three CDs. It will also include two DVDs and extensive liner notes, exclusive photographs and a poster of Ornette plus selected memorabilia.

Ornette Coleman was an American music icon. He was self-taught and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize, the Japanese Praemium Imperiale, two Guggenheims, honorary doctorates and a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master honour. He took jazz away from the conventional melody into unexplored territories, against the grain and often misunderstood by the established jazz audience. 

Coleman passed away on June 11th 2015. The memorial service, held two weeks later at Manhattan’s Riverside Church, saw inspired tributes and performances by many of Coleman’s greatest fans, friends, and followers, among them Pharaoh Sanders, Cecil Taylor, Henry Threadgill and Jason Moran, Jack DeJohnette and Savion Glover, David Murray, Joe Lovano, Al Macdowell, Charnett Moffett, and members of Ornette’s renowned Prime Time band, including bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma.
