New album for The Bad Plus Joshua Redman
A collaborative album between Love Supreme Festival confirmed saxophonist Joshua Redman and Minneapolis piano trio The Bad Plus to be released June 8th.
June 8th sees the release of a new collaborative album between saxophonist Joshua Redman and Minneapolis trio The Bad Plus on Nonesuch Records. The Bad Plus Joshua Redman, as they are known, are also confirmed to appear at this year’s Love Supreme Festival.
Seven of the nine tracks on the recording, also called ‘The Bad Plus Joshua Redman’, are new compositions from all four members. The other two songs on the album, ‘Dirty Blonde’ and ‘Silence Is The Question’, are new arrangements of Bad Plus favourites.
In 2011 Redman was invited to perform with the band for a week at The Blue Note in New York City, before venturing into the studio together. The Bad Plus have spent twenty years almost exclusively as a piano trio. This is the very first time a record has been made with a fourth member after ten albums despite occasional guest live appearances. Conversely Joshua Redman continues his love of sharing recordings with musicians, having worked with Brian Blade, Christian McBride, Brad Mehldau, and Pat Metheny, as well as with the SFJAZZ Collective and his own band James Farm.
The Bad Plus pianist Ethan Iverson said, “on the live gigs, Josh plays magnificent, long tenor solos which are very much in the jazz tradition. That’s obviously not the focus when we play as The Bad Plus. It’s fun too for us to enjoy that extended blowing territory, especially with someone as great as Josh. On the album, however, there is still a focus on composition.”
Redman adds, “Playing with The Bad Plus has allowed me to explore a part of my playing, and my musical heritage, that I’ve never before accessed in quite the same way with any other group. The adventure with The Bad Plus pushes me toward the fringes and draws me into the core.”
The Bad Plus Joshua Redman will be at Jazz FM’s Love Supreme Festival 3rd - 5th July at Glynde Place in Sussex.
Joshua Redman plays at Cadogan Hall in London with James Farm along with Aaron Parks, Matt Penman and Eric Harland on Friday November 13th as part of EFG London Jazz Festival.
