This Monday February 9th Ronnie Scott’s jazz club presents ‘Jazzerbaijan’, part of the Buta Festival celebrating Azerbaijani arts and culture.
Two of today’s great exponents of Azeri jazz are performing. Pianist Amina Figarova, who has been enjoying airplay on Jazz FM with her recent release 'Twelve', returns after a successful show in 2012, and award winning experimental pianist Isfar Sarabski who is grandson of celebrated opera singer Huseyngulu Sarabski.
Others from Azerbaijan including pianists Shahin Novrasli and Aziza Mustafa Zadeh have built solid and growing international reputations with album releases, festival appearances and collaborations. Jazz in the country is certainly in a great place today compared to the bleak outlook of the late twentieth century when, stuck deep behind the Iron Curtain, jazz was regarded as a ‘degenerate’ foreign music by the executive. Azerbaijan though was always a jazz hot spot in the Soviet Union and today’s musicians celebrate and continue the legacy.
