Herbie Hancock to work on a new album with Pharrell Williams, Flying Lotus and Thundercat

Herbie Hancock is to follow up his 2010 album ‘The Imagine Project’ with a new album after being given a National Arts Award from the Americans for the Arts on Monday.

Hancock revealed he is looking to collaborate with Pharrell Williams. He's already started working with producer Flying Lotus, having played on several tracks on his 'You're Dead!' album. He's also to collaborate with bassist Thundercat, who he considers a kindred spirit, and is excited about the new music movement coming out of LA at the moment mixing elements of electronic music, hip hop and jazz.

It's not clear what Herbie is planning for the album just yet. Speaking to Billboard Hancock commented, ”I don't have what one might normally define as a clear-cut architecture of the record. There are several ideas that are passing through my sights. But I've been trying to do a new album for four years, and there's been little bits and nibbles but no time to do a record. It's been going on way too long so I finally said, ‘OK, enough of this’.” He now plans to do little else until the record is complete.

Guitarist Carlos Santana has also revealed that Hancock will be a key member of his new all-star band Supernova along with saxophonist Wayne Shorter.
