Herbie Hancock confirmed for Love Supreme Festival
The legendary pianist is set to appear on Saturday 1st July 2017 with his electric quintet
Visionary pianist, composer and bandleader Herbie Hancock is announced today as the second artist for next year’s Love Supreme Jazz Festival. He’ll appear on Saturday 1st July, in the stunning surroundings of Glynde Place in East Sussex with his electric quintet, in another UK summer festival exclusive. George Benson is already confirmed to appear on the Sunday night, 2nd July.
Herbie Hancock is a true icon of modern music who, throughout an illustrious career, has continued to amaze audiences across the globe. He’s won fourteen Grammy’s, and at the 2016 ceremony was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. Herbie won an Oscar in 1986 for scoring the film "'Round Midnight", in which he also appeared as an actor.
He’s been at the top of his game for over fifty years, joining Miles Davis’ Quintet in 1963 and releasing his ‘Takin’ Off’ album with the huge hit ‘Watermelon Man’. Herbie played a key role in the birth of jazz fusion with Miles, and his own solo career blossomed on Blue Note Records with classic albums including 'Maiden Voyage’ and 'Empyrean Isles'. In 1973, his Headhunters band crossed-over and created the first jazz album to go platinum. In 1980, Herbie introduced the trumpeter Wynton Marsalis to the world as a solo artist, producing his debut album.
In recent years, his award winning ‘Imagine Project’ has been praised for its central themes of peace and global responsibility, leading to Herbie’s appointment as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and his creation of International Jazz Day celebrated every April 30th.
Herbie is quoted as saying: “I’m excited to be bringing my band to Sussex next year to perform at The Love Supreme Jazz Festival. It’s been a while since we’ve performed at a summer festival in the UK so I’m sure it’ll be a great vibe.”
Festival Director Ciro Romano said: “Herbie Hancock is without doubt one of the most influential musicians of all time and is an artist we’ve been wanting to book for the festival since day one. His current band features some of the most exciting musicians on the scene and to say that we’re delighted that they’ll be performing their only UK festival date of the summer with us is a huge understatement.”
