Saxophonist John Coltrane is now the latest in a list of jazz legends to feature in a documentary film. ‘Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary’ will present the musician’s life through interviews with other musicians including Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins, Carlos Santana and Kamasi Washington.

The synopsis says, “Revolutionary artist and innovator, John Coltrane expanded the frontiers of his craft by introducing elements from musical traditions the world over. Chasing Trane reveals the critical events, passions, experiences, and challenges that shaped the life of John Coltrane and his revolutionary sounds. It is a story of demons and darkness, of persistence and redemption. Above all else, it is the incredible spiritual journey of a man who found himself and, in the process, created an extraordinary body of work that transcends all barriers of geography, race, religion and age.”

'Chasing Trane' debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2016. The narrator is none other than Denzel Washington who voices Coltrane’s own words in film. John Coltrane died in July 1967 after suffering liver cancer. He was only 40 years old.
