David Sanborn, Hiatus Kaiyote and Jacob Collier for Cheltenham Jazz Festival

Saxophonist David Sanborn is among a number of top names newly added to this April’s Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

Sanborn will play the purpose made Big Top arena on May 1st with his Electric Band. This is Sanborn’s debut at Cheltenham. Also added is vocalist José James on April 30th performing songs from his forthcoming new album for Blue Note Records.

Young British rising star Jacob Collier, who’s music is immersed in technical wizardry and audio visuals, is also due to release a new album later this year. Collier has been mentored for some time by American great Quincy Jones. After his support for Terence Blanchard at EFG London Jazz Festival Collier will play his own Cheltenham date at the town’s Jazz Arena on April 29th. Jacob recently debuted this show at the Montreux Jazz Festival, opening for Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. The Guardian heralded Collier as “jazz music’s new messiah.” 

Stars of 2015’s Love Supreme Festival, Australian avant-r&b band Hiaitus Kaiyote have also joined the line-up. 

In a fitting move on May 1st this year’s Cheltenham Jazz Festival will also host a tribute concert for British pianist John Taylor who died last summer unexpectedly. Taylor played Cheltenham many times and was once Artist in Residence.

These add to the already announced performances from singer Becca Stevens, Omar Sosa, Django Bates and a festival debut for trumpeter Christian Scott.

Cheltenham Jazz Festival will run from 27th April to 2nd May 2016.
