Cafe Society swings into Soho
After acclaimed theatre runs on Broadway and in London, the club version of ’Cafe Society Swing’ comes to London’s Pizza Express August 18.
After hugely successful theatre runs in New York last Christmas, and in London, the club version of ’Cafe Society Swing’ comes to London’s Pizza Express Jazz Club on Tuesday August 18.
The legendary 1930s New York nightclub Cafe Society opened in 1938. It was America’s first racially integrated jazz club and a hothouse for jazz talent, amongst them Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie and many others. Writer and pianist Alex Webb brings the story to life with an eight-piece band and vocalists. The acclaimed New York tenure included singers Charenee Wade and Allan Harris who’s recent albums have been featured on Jazz FM. The New York Times described the show as, ”A balm for the soul, though the story it tells is bittersweet.”
At Pizza Express vocalists Vimala Rowe and Ciyo Brown feature along with saxophonists Nathaniel Facey and Frank Griffith, trumpeter Sue Richardson, Richard Henry, bassist Miles Danso, drummer Shane Forbes and Alex Webb.
