As a part of the ‘Equator Festival: Women of the World Series’ the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) is holding an afternoon of debate around the role and profile of female composers. This takes place on Saturday 24th October at King’s Place in North London. After the debate there will be a concert showcase from seven leading Classical, Jazz and World Music composers.
Included are Parliamentary Jazz Award-winning trumpeter Laura Jurd, British Composer Award and Royal Philharmonic Society Award winner Mira Calix and Nicola LeFanu, a Doctor of music from 4 Universities and Royal Philharmonic Society Elgar Bursary winner. Also taking part will be National Youth Jazz Collective founder Issie Barratt, Olivier Award-winning conductor and composer Dr Shirley J Thompson, Jenni Roditi, artistic director, vocalist, composer and winner of an Independent Music Award and critically acclaimed vocalist, songwriter, composer, producer and lyricist Emily Saunders.
The panel debate will also feature London schoolgirl Jessy McCabe who campaigned to have works by female composers included in the A level syllabus. Her petition has now been successful with a commitment from the EdExcel examining board to address this omission.
