Audacious new film 'Whiplash' shows at London Film Festival

A new film, ‘Whiplash’, reaches selected British cinema screens this month. It tells the story of a brilliant but brutal music teacher and his prodigious young jazz drumming student. It began life as a short film which then secured the investment to make a full movie.

The student Andy Neyman (played by Miles Teller - Divergent, 21 & Over) is determined to be the best at his music conservatory. His teacher Terence Fletcher (played by JK Simmons - Ultimate Spider-Man, The Re-write) pushes Neyman beyond his emotional and mental limits, preying on any shred of fear or lack of confidence and exploiting it to the fullest. The resulting tension in the film, written and directed by 28 year old Damien Chazelle, is one more akin to a high octane action movie. Highly sprung, enthralling and breathless viewing won ‘Whiplash’ two top awards at the Sundance Film Festival. Just like his character in the film Teller can play the drums, and spent three weeks intensively learning to play the jazz pieces in the film.
