Sony Music have re-released a 3 CD box set compilation tracking the music of pioneering jazz fusion band Weather Report. The band are recognised to have three main eras with distinctly different sounds. They stayed ahead of technological development throughout and latterly reflected keyboard player Joe Zawinul’s deepening interest in World music.
‘Forecast: Tomorrow’ presents 37 tracks chronologically in the form of a hand sized novel book. Musically it opens with three cuts from the period before the band came together featuring members Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter playing with Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley at the turn of the 1970s. There's also one from Shorter’s solo ’Super Nova’ album. Most of the material has been openly available for years but one previously unissued track, a live version of ‘Nubian Sundance’ from 1974 is included plus the full unedited version of ‘Eurydice’ and the set closes with a DJ Logic remix of ’125th Street Congress’, a piece sampled already by several hip hop artists.
Also included is a 2-hour DVD of a concert from 1978 recorded for German TV and a comprehensive 100-page book.
