The city of Alton in Illinois has prepared for a commemorative statue of one of its greatest sons, jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. Ground was officially broken to prepare for the laying of bricks, each one sold individually, and sold out. $100,000 was raised through sales of the bricks and the Miles Davis Memorial Statue Committee hopes to raise a further $20,000 to complete the statue.
Miles Davis was born in Alton in 1926 and the city felt a statue to honour him was long overdue. Chairman of the Committee Pat Ackman said, “I feel it will be a beautiful addition to the downtown area. This will be the only publicly displayed statue of Miles Davis in this country.”
