Leading light of the UK jazz scene Shabaka Hutchings has launched the brand new label Native Rebel Recordings.
The Sons of Kemet leader's new outfit have signed saxophonist Chelsea Carmichael, who is known for her work with the Mercury Prize-nominated group Seed Ensemble, Theon Cross and The Neue Grafik Ensemble.
The multi-Jazz FM Award-winning composer and reeds player's new label aims to offer a "collaborative and flexible infrastructure for emerging creative artists" and recording in an intensive 3-day period without prior rehearsals.
Talking to Music Week, Hutchings revealed "More than being a label boss, it was the idea of what it means to be a producer".
Carmichael's single 'Myriad' is the first release from the fledgling label, with the saxophonist joined by Dave Okumu of The Invisible among the personnel and with Shabaka producing.
Chelsea Carmichael will be releasing a double album with the label later in 2021.
