Jazz, Soul and Blues winners at the Grammys
It was another great night for jazz, soul and blues stars at the 67th annual Grammy Awards which took place in Los Angeles overnight and included performances from the likes of Jacob Collier, Janelle Monáe, John Legend, Joe Bonnemassa and many more.
Winners this year included Meshell Ndegeocello for her Gospel of James Baldwin project, singer Samara Joy for best jazz performance and best jazz vocal album for her ‘Joyful Holiday’ Christmas album, and another double win for Jon Batiste for his autobiographical music film ‘American Symphony’, including the best song written for visual media for ‘It Never Went Away’.
Norah Jones collected her 10th Grammy, in this case best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for ‘Visions’, and Britain’s own Jacob Collier won best arrangement for his updated version of ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ featuring Tori Kelly.
There were blues awards for Ruthie Foster and Taj Mahal, while New Orleans star Tank & The Bangas won Best Spoken Word Poetry Album.
Chick Corea was posthumously given the best Jazz Instrumental album together with Bela Fleck, Best Large jazz ensemble was given to Dan Pugach Big Band and the brilliant Avery Sunshine jointly won Best Progressive R&B Album.
During the main Grammy show, there was an all-star tribute to Quincy Jones featuring Will Smith, Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder among many others.
