Dame Cleo Laine dies, aged 97

Known as British Jazz Royalty with an astonishing four octave range, this icon of jazz vocals passed away in her sleep on 24th July

The celebrated British jazz singer, actress, and cultural icon Dame Cleo Laine DBE has passed away at the age of 97, her children report, peacefully in her sleep yesterday (24th July).

Born in Southall, West London in 1927 to a Jamaican father and English mother, Dame Cleo overcame early hardship with grace to become one of the greatest jazz vocalists of the 20th century. Her breakthrough came when she joined the Dankworth Seven in the early 1950s, later marrying its leader, John Dankworth, in 1958. Together they became known as “The Royal Couple of British Jazz.”

She became known for an astonishing four-octave vocal range and mastery of scat singing, earning herself the rare distinction of Grammy nominations in jazz, pop, and classical categories, and winning the jazz vocal category for her Cleo at Carnegie: The 10th Anniversary Concert in 1983

In 1969, Cleo and John founded The Stables music venue at their home in Wavendon, Buckinghamshire. This performance and education hub became instrumental in expanding access to music and fostering community engagement over decades

David Meadowcroft, chairman of the Stables charity, said: "Dame Cleo was a remarkable performer who was loved by audiences around the world and her commitment to ensuring young people had access to great music and music education will continue through the work of The Stables."

Chief executive and artistic director Monica Ferguson said: "Dame Cleo was admired greatly by fans, other musicians and by The Stables staff and volunteers. She will be greatly missed but her unique talent will always be remembered."

In 2018, Dame Cleo received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Jazz FM Awards that year gracing us with a beautiful performance.

She is survived by her children Jacqui and Alec. Her voice, artistry, and indomitable spirit leave an indelible mark on music worldwide—and her legacy will resound at The Stables, in jazz halls, theatres, and hearts across generations.
