Record Store Day is the one day of the year when over 260 independent record shops all across the UK come together to celebrate their unique culture!

This Record Store Day (22 April 2023), Jazz FM will be celebrating the labels that have shaped jazz, soul and blues.

Across the day there will be a mix of classic and contemporary music from labels such as Blue Note, Decca, Edition, Brownswood Recordings, Acid Jazz, Concord, and more.

Alongside highlighting the releases we're excited about (below), we've invited owners of Independent Record Stores from across the UK to share their favourite music and tell us about their business throughout the day.

Crash Records (Leeds) - RSD23

Crash Records in Leeds

"Crash Records has been a part of the Leeds music scene for 30 years. Our first shop opened on Woodhouse Lane in 1985. Two years later we made the move to our present address, 35 The Headrow, where we have remained ever since."

"We carry a broad range of CDs and vinyl (7”/12” singles and LPs) and specialise in indie, alternative, rock, punk, and metal & soundtracks, plus a few other genres. We also keep an ever-changing range of local stock in the shop."

"In recent years, we’ve also facilitated a wide range of intimate album launch shows and in-store appearances with many household names and rising stars alike, giving fans the chance to see their favourite artists in small settings/venues that would otherwise not be possible on the regular touring circuit."

Dig Vinyl (Liverpool) - RSD23

Dig Vinyl in Liverpool

Established in March 2014 and quickly becoming a destination for tourists and locals alike, Dig Vinyl was the inevitable product of decades worth of record dealing, DJing, band managing, record label running, and music making of its founders, Anthony Nyland and Carl Emery. Stocking a wide range of wax from deep psych to spiritual jazz and all stops in-between, Dig Vinyl aims to be a vinyl paradise for collectors and heads of all ages, budgets, and musical tastes. The shop is open daily on Liverpool's famous Bold Street, and can be found online at digvinyl.co.uk for mail order and click & collect.

Hey Joe (Brentwood) - RSD23

Hey Joe in Brentwood, Essex

"Hey Joe Music & Coffee is a small, family-run, independent record shop, cafe & occasional live music venue which opened inside the Baytree Centre in Brentwood, Essex in February 2020."

"It was opened by siblings Lucy & Marc, and Marc's partner Sarah, with lots of regular help from family members, who between them all have over 60 years of experience in music retail."

"We have thousands of albums in stock on vinyl & cd, available in-store and online at heyjoemusic.co.uk. We also sell a wide range of hot and cold drinks, frozen smoothies, milkshakes, some delicious homemade cakes, brownies and cookies that are all baked by Marc and Lucy's mum - Linda".

"We love to help support the local music scene too, putting on regular live acoustic shows that are free entry for the public".

Sounds of the Universe (Soho, London) - RSD23

Sound of the Universe in Soho, London

Sounds of the Universe is found in the heart of London’s Soho.

"With regular shipments from the USA, Jamaica, Japan, Brazil and Europe we reckon that on top of our constantly updated new releases, you are now looking at the largest selection of Reggae, Dubstep, House, Disco, Funk and Soul, Brazilian, Latin, African and world beats in the UK".

"As well as new CDs and vinyl, many of these sections also have original vinyl – all of which are guaranteed. We also have a killer selection of books and DVDs. Sounds of the Universe is connected to the record label Soul Jazz Records".

About Record Store Day:

Record Store Day 2023 will take place on Saturday 22nd April 2023.

Record Store Day is the one day of the year when over 260 independent record shops all across the UK come together to celebrate their unique culture. Special vinyl releases are made exclusively for the day and many shops and cities host artist performances and events to mark the occasion. Thousands more shops celebrate the day around the globe in what’s become one of the biggest annual events on the music calendar.

The event was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners, as employees wanted a way to celebrate and spread the word about nearly 1400 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008.

Today there are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica.

This is a day for the people who make up the world of the record store—the staff, the customers, and the artists—to come together and celebrate the special role these independently owned stores play in their communities.

While there’s only one Record Store Day a year, the organisation works with both independent and major labels throughout the year to create contests, special releases and promotions in order to spotlight the benefits of supporting these independent, locally-owned stores with music purchases throughout the year.

In 2010, Record Store Day coordinated its first RSD Black Friday event, which gives record stores exclusive releases as part of the attempt to redirect the focus of the biggest shopping day of the year to the desirable, special things to be found at local stores.
