As if WhatsApp notifications weren't annoying enough they are about to get a whole lot worse thanks to the latest update.

The popular messaging app has added a new update into Android and iOS making it possible for users to 'tag' somebody in a group chat, leading to a notification for that tagged person.

If you think muting the group chat will work, think again! The new update means that if somebody wants your attention, they can easily get it with a simple tag, even if you have your conversations muted.

The tagging system will work similar to a Facebook comment or Twitter mention, with users having to use the '@' symbol and the users name from their contact book. Users will be able to tag multiple contacts in one message as well as contacts that are not saved in your phone book but are part of the same group message.

The new update has also expanded the size of group chats, taking it from 100 to 256 participants.

The latest update has split opinions of fans, some thinking it's a great improvement to avoid missing any vital information, with others believing it will make the chat app irritating.
