Former Coronation Street star Tracy Brabin has been re-elected as the mayor of West Yorkshire for a second term.

The Labour politician was once the party's MP in Batley and Spen, the seat held by Jo Cox before her murder in 2016.

She first became West Yorkshire mayor in 2021, and oversees county policies such as transport and housing.

During the election campaign, Ms. Brabin promised to bring bus services in West Yorkshire back into public control.

The plan would see buses taken out of private hands, and public money reinvested into services, stations and a single ticketing system introduced.

Ms. Brabin also wants to start work on a tram system between Leeds and Bradford, with "spades in the ground" by 2028.

The £2 billion pound project is set to be presented to the Department for Transport later this year.

Outside of transport, Ms. Brabin has admitted there is more to do on crime in West Yorkshire, following a spate of high-profile stabbings, including the murder of Alfie Lewis in Leeds.

She has also promised new measures to cut energy bills for homeowners and renters, with a home insulation scheme.
