Leeds to introduce kerbside glass collections from August
From next month, people in the city will be able to recycle glass from home for the first time
It has been confirmed kerbside glass collections will start in Leeds next month, for the first time.
Currently, residents have to recycle glass at points across the city, including near schools and outside supermarkets.
But the council is introducing kerbside collections from August 1st, in a move it claims will save 2,6000 tones of carbon a year.
That's the equivalent of moving 975 cars off the road each year.
Glass of all colours and shapes will be placed into green bins, meaning everything from wine, spirit and beer bottles, to jam and sauce jars can be recycled.
Leeds City Council’s executive member for climate, energy, environment and green space, Councillor Mohammed Rafique said: “We are delighted to be able to start this glass collection service, which we know has long been an aspiration for the city and its residents.
"From August 1st people can put their bottles and jars in their existing green bin which will help make a significant difference to our recycling rates and benefit the environment and the local economy.
"This is part of providing simpler recycling opportunities and choices for Leeds residents, without creating more bins for them to manage and put out on the streets.
"It will be a win-win all round and we can’t wait to get it started.”
