Southend is still in shock this morning (16 October), following the murder of MP Sir David Amess.

The 69-year-old, who represented Southend West, was stabbed to death at a constituency meeting at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea yesterday (15 October).

Leader of Southend Borough Council, Ian Gilbert said:

"It's is a big loss to this area, Sir David has represented this area for a long period of time. A lot of people know him and a lot of people will be deeply sad about what has happened."

Last night, dozens of people attended a vigil in Leigh-on-Sea for Sir David Amess and floral tributes are being laid close to where he died.

Monsignor Kevin Hale is the parish priest, who knew Sir David well:

"He was seen at everything. Sometimes there were multiple functions, especially evenings around Christmas time, but David would spread himself very thinly, but in a very good sense. He would be there, throwing himself into things, very enthusiastically. That's how we shall remember him."

The Metropolitan Police has confirmed the fatal stabbing of Sir David is now being treated as a terrorist incident.

Essex Police confirmed yesterday that a 25-year-old had been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Roger Hirst, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex, said:

“This is a shocking and utterly despicable attack against somebody who was an outstanding MP and has worked tirelessly for their community for many, many years. My prayers are with Sir David’s family at this incredibly difficult time. I also want to acknowledge the officers who attended the event for their bravery and courage.

“It is vital that we give the police all our support to ensure that they can do their job at this time. For anybody who has information please do not hesitate to contact the police.”

The Home Secretary and Witham MP, Priti Patel, has asked all police forces to review security arrangements for MPs 'with immediate effect'.

A firework display being held by Southend BID tonight (16 October), has been cancelled as a mark of respect for Sir David, who leaves behind a wife and five children.
