A man has been charged in connection with the death of a two-year-old boy who died after being involved in a hit-and-run in Smethwick on Saturday (14 Dec).

Two cars - one of which was stolen - collided on Dartmouth Road shortly before 11pm. Four adults - two women, aged 30 and 29, and two men, both aged 30 - were also injured.

The 29-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man, who had both been in the same vehicle as the toddler, remain in a serious condition in hospital.

The driver of the stolen vehicle fled the scene, sparking a police appeal for them to hand themselves in.

Police made an arrest on Monday (16 Dec) after "acting on information".

Sharjeel Shahzad, 30, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and without insurance, and failing to stop after a collision.

He is due at Birmingham Magistrates Court today.

Police are still appealing for witnesses to get in touch.
